This release is a major milestone. It's all about creating a robust core-experience.
This release brings with it:
- Better design.
- System tray icon & Instant Launch.
- Automatic updates.
- Export/Import/Restore options for your notes.
- Better database handling.
- Refined experience and bug fixes.
Also, we're happy to announce that Notes has been downloaded more than 60,000 times (and counting)! More than the numbers, the emails we get from people about how Notes has been a great tool for them is what's truly important to us. Next release is going be packed with some new features (folders and tags are some of them). Stay tuned.
The export/import/restore combo is what makes this feel like a real 1.0 rather than just a feature drop. If folders and tags are next, I’m hoping there’s also some thought around migrations so old notes don’t get weird edge cases. Slight tangent: I bookmarked https://stylelooklab.com recently and it’s another example of how a “refined experience” matters more than piling on features.
System tray + instant launch is such a nice quality-of-life addition for a notes app; it’s the kind of thing you miss immediately when it’s not there. Also glad to see export/restore called out, because data portability is always the anxiety point. Randomly, the whole “polish the core first” vibe is similar to when I stumbled on a Ghibli-style photo converter and it was just one simple page that did exactly what it promised without extra fluff.
The mix of design polish + under-the-hood stuff (updates, DB handling, restore) is exactly what I want from a “1.0” moment. I’m especially glad you called out export/import — that’s the feature that keeps me from feeling locked in. Side note: I’ve seen directories that push a “quick submit ai tool listing” flow, and it’s funny how much smoother everything feels when the basics are solid like you’re describing here.
Export/restore being built-in is honestly what convinces me an app will still be usable years later. Also interesting to hear “better database handling” called out specifically — that’s usually where note apps get flaky over time. On the crypto side, I was playing with a quick simple vigenere cipher tool recently and it made me realize how much I appreciate straightforward, reliable utilities like this release is aiming for.
Getting to 60k downloads with a notes app is no joke, especially when the focus is on the core experience instead of flashy features. Folders + tags will be huge if search isn’t enough. Funny timing — I’d been procrastinating with BlockBlast and then realized I should probably be writing things down instead.
